چکیده

Solution-crystallization is studied for two polyfluorene polymers possessing different side-chain structures. Thermal analysis and temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy are used to clarify the nature of the crystallization process, while X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy reveal important differences in the resulting microstructures. It is shown that the planar-zigzag chain conformation termed the β-phase, which is observed for certain linear-side-chain polyfluorenes, is necessary for the formation of so-called polymer-solvent compounds for these polymers. Introduction of alternating fluorene repeat units with branched side-chains prevents formation of the β-phase conformation and results in non-solvated, i.e. melt-crystallization-type, polymer crystals. Unlike non-solvated polymer crystals, for which the chain conformation is stabilized by its incorporation into a crystalline lattice, the β-phase conformation is stabilized by complexation with solvent molecules and, therefore, its formation does not require specific inter-chain interactions. The presented results clarify the fundamental differences between the β-phase and other conformational/crystalline forms of polyfluorenes. © 2015 The Authors. Solution-Crystallization and Related Phenomena in 9,9-Dialkyl-Fluorene Polymers. I. Crystalline Polymer-Solvent Compound Formation for Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)

Polymer-solvent compound formation, occurring via co-crystallization of polymer chains and selected small-molecular species, is demonstrated for the conjugated polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and a range of organic solvents. The resulting crystallization and gelation processes in PFO solutions are studied by differential scanning calorimetry, with X-ray diffraction providing additional ...

Influence of side chains on the self-alignment capability of electroluminescent polyfluorenes.

We report a significant role of side chains in the propagation of molecular orientation upon annealing the liquid crystal phase of polyfluorenes. Direct rubbing of poly(9,9-di(octyl)fluorene) led to the orientation of polymer segments in the top-most region of the film and enhanced propagation of this orientation along the rubbing direction was observed upon annealing. In contrast, the rubbing-...

Influence of structure-selective fluorene-based polymer wrapping on optical transitions of single-wall carbon nanotubes.

To understand how fluorene-based polymers selectively extract specific semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), we compared the optical transitions of SWCNTs wrapped with poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-pyridine) (PFOPy), i.e., structure-selective polymers, with those wrapped with poly(9,9-di-n-dodecylfluorene) (PFD), i.e., non-selective polymers, in organic solvents by using photolum...

Effect of side-chain asymmetry on the intermolecular structure and order-disorder transition in alkyl-substituted polyfluorenes.

We study relations among the side-chain asymmetry, structure, and order-disorder transition (ODT) in hairy-rod-type poly(9,9-dihexylfluorene) (PF6) with two identical side chains and atactic poly(9-octyl-9-methyl-fluorene) (PF1-8) with two different side chains per repeat. PF6 and PF1-8 organize into alternating side-chain and backbone layers that transform into an isotropic phase at T^{ODT}(PF...

Novel bright-emission small-molecule NIR-II fluorophores for in vivo tumor imaging and image-guided surgery.

Though high brightness and biocompatible small NIR-II dyes are highly desirable in clinical or translational cancer research, their fluorescent cores are relatively limited and their synthetic processes are somewhat complicated. Herein, we have explored the design and synthesis of novel NIR-II fluorescent materials (H1) without tedious chromatographic isolation with improved fluorescence perfor...
